COMPONENT REFERENCE / RESISTORS
Resistors
Resistance is only one line on the specification. A purchase can match ohms and still fail because of heat, drift, voltage stress or pulse shape. Separate the resistive technology from the job it must do.
How the range is organised
Construction
Thick film, thin film, metal foil/strip, wirewound. Describes the resistive element and manufacturing approach.
Function
General biasing, precision ratio, current sensing, high voltage, pulse handling. One function can use several technologies. Current-sense is not a peer material to thick film.
Physical arrangement
Chip, wide terminal, four-terminal Kelvin, axial, chassis mount, array. Changes layout, heat flow, parasitics and measurement connections.
Qualification / environment
Automotive, anti-sulfur, flameproof, fusible, humidity stability. Each is a separate, exact-series requirement. Flameproof and fusible do not mean the same thing.
A useful first comparison
| Guide | Classification | Useful starting point | What a matching Ω value misses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thick film | Construction | Pull-ups, bias, ordinary dividers | TCR, noise, sulfur, pulse and heat limits |
| Thin film | Construction | Precision analog gain and measurement | Long-term drift, tracking, humidity and self-heating |
| Current-sense / shunt | Function; often metal element | Convert current into a small voltage | Kelvin routing, terminal resistance and thermal EMF |
| High voltage / pulse | Two distinct stress requirements | Voltage dividers, surge and transient paths | Continuous voltage is different from pulse survival |
| Wirewound | Construction | Power loads, discharge and selected pulse duties | Inductance, mounting temperature and energy limit |
These rows are useful guide topics, not mutually exclusive bins. A wirewound resistor can be a current shunt; a thin-film resistor can be a high-voltage part.
Compare the types
Thick-film resistors
Thick film is a practical starting point for everyday biasing and pull-ups. It still needs a defined power, voltage and environmental envelope.

Thin film is often a good direction for precision analog work. Initial tolerance, temperature drift and long-term stability are separate numbers.
Read the guideResistorsCurrent-sense resistors
A shunt creates a small voltage proportional to current. The useful accuracy comes from the resistor, connections, temperature and amplifier together.
Read the guideResistorsHigh-voltage and pulse resistors
High voltage asks how much electrical stress a resistor can sustain continuously. Pulse capability asks what a specified transient does to it. One rating does not establish the other.

Wirewound parts are useful for selected power and pulse duties. Their winding and mounting conditions are as important as their resistance.

What Chinese suppliers can offer
A domestic resistor shortlist can span standard thick film, precision thin film and current-sense parts, which makes it possible to source several board functions through a smaller set of technical conversations. Fenghua publishes these as distinct families. The opportunity is strongest when an exact value, package and error or pulse budget can be compared on the same basis. Include qualification effort, reel quantity, shipping and traceability in the total cost.
Start with the right questions
- Request an exact ordering code and current datasheet.
- Compare samples under your actual electrical and thermal conditions.
- Confirm the supply route, traceability and change-notification arrangements.
These guides explain selection principles. Final decisions require the current datasheet for the exact ordering code, operating conditions and appropriate application testing.
